From 19 September until 6 October 2011 three Dutch cavers with their tanzanian guide did research on the slopes of mount Kilimanjaro's biggest volcano KIBO. Their expedition was very successful. They discovered over 50 caves and the highest tube (4743m) on the world so far. For the main volcano KIBO these are the first tubes ever found.
They got support from an UK caver who did research on Mawensi.

Kilimanjaro the biggest volcano in Africa

TanzaniaKilimajaro is the biggest volcano in Afrika. During its evolution many eruptions have taken place. Lava tubes are natural conduits through which lava travels beneath the surface of a lava flow, expelled by a volcano during an eruption. When the flow has ceased and the rock has cooled long cave-like channels called tubes remain.

Kilimanjaro lies on a tectonic line intersection 80 km. east of the tectonically active Rift Valley. The activity which created this stratovolcano dates back less than a million years and the central ash pit on Kibo, the highest volcanic centre, may be only several hundred years old.
